BNY offers XRP custody for eligible clients, one rollout type available
BNY has introduced custody services for XRP, though only one type of rollout is currently available.
According to an announcement from Ripple on October 27, eligible institutional clients can now keep XRP assets through BNY, which provides an alternative means for institutions to manage and transfer the native token of the XRP Ledger. This service offers a banking channel for securing the asset and managing its operations. BNY characterizes its platform as integrating custody with functions such as settlement, accounting, and servicing. The announcement did not identify any client holding funded XRP custody, nor did it disclose an XRP balance or any incremental buying.
Transferring tokens that clients already possess to BNY would result in a change of custodian without necessarily generating new demand for coins. This change furnishes a pathway to hold XRP within BNY's servicing infrastructure. While the bank's pre-existing method for handling tokenized assets and stablecoins offers some context, the XRP custody offering specifically pertains to the token an institution would own.
BNY states that its general custody platform incorporates segregated wallets, operational oversight, and control mechanisms. Furthermore, it presents digital and traditional assets within a unified environment for accounting, servicing, and settlement, which can simplify asset administration and reconciliation. These capabilities relate to how an institution manages an asset after deciding to hold it, potentially lessening operational friction.
However, the mere availability of custody does not confirm that every institution possesses the necessary authorization, mandate, or willingness to acquire XRP. Neither BNY's platform description nor the release itself furnishes a specific list of eligible customers or geographical areas for XRP. BNY notes that the provision of accounts, services, and products varies depending on the customer and location.
The bank's prior expansion of European custody on October 8 was limited to certain institutions, and that earlier statement did not establish XRP-specific availability throughout the EU, meaning the bank's physical presence cannot be interpreted as a map of where the new XRP service is accessible.
The existing relationship between BNY and Ripple covered a different aspect of digital finance. The July 9, 2025, announcement detailed BNY's appointment as the primary reserve custodian for RLUSD, which concerns the cash and reserve assets backing the stablecoin. The October 27 release also references its custody arrangement with Ripple Prime.
The most concrete proof of service utilization would be XRP being deposited into funded client custody accounts. Nevertheless, a balance held at BNY would only address a portion of the demand question; it would indicate tokens held there but leave open the manner in which those tokens were acquired.
For instance, an entity that already holds XRP with another custodian could move that position to BNY, thereby increasing the bank's reported XRP holdings without any supplementary market purchase. The tokens would simply possess a new custodian arrangement. A situation where a client secures more XRP for a new allocation constitutes a separate development. Linking custody growth to such an acquisition would demonstrate the service accompanying additional purchasing. Proving that BNY's new access caused a purchase would necessitate an additional connection to the client's investment determination.
Even an increase in the total value of custody denominated in dollars requires careful consideration. A rise in the token's price can elevate the worth of held assets without increasing the quantity of XRP. Token balances alongside evidence of new acquisitions would offer more insight than a custody valuation in isolation.
Client custody support also does not provide grounds to regard BNY as an XRP purchaser for its own balance sheet. The act of a bank providing safekeeping and a client choosing to buy tokens are distinct decisions and participants.
Separately, C2FO, a platform assisting businesses in obtaining early payment on approved invoices, announced a different collaboration with Ripple on October 27. The two entities plan to integrate financing and settlement for C2FO Instant Pay onto the XRP Ledger, utilizing RLUSD for settlement. This endeavor aims to reduce the settlement latency following the arrangement of early payment, and a relevant follow-up point is the volume of XRP the service will require to operate when RLUSD serves as its settlement asset.
C2FO's past working-capital activities reflect existing early-payment schemes, not the verified volume of Instant Pay settled on XRPL. The Instant Pay product page outlines rollout constraints: businesses can join a waiting list, access will broaden through a phased rollout over the subsequent months, and the offering will debut exclusively in the US. The qualifications for this rollout leave actual settlement volumes and uptake as matters yet to be observed.
Ripple and BNY are currently reviewing a supply-chain financing initiative from C2FO, intended to widen investor access to approved receivables, contingent upon client stipulations. They also plan to enhance support for XRPL-issued assets and strive toward direct minting and redemption of RLUSD for BNY clients. These plans do not confirm that invoice principal will be bought or held in XRP, nor do they indicate that the proposed BNY minting, redemption, and financing services have commenced.
The ledger's documentation regarding transaction costs shows a current minimum of 10 drops for a standard transaction, a fee that may escalate under heavier usage and is destroyed upon transaction. Its reserve documentation specifies a 1 XRP base reserve and generally 0.2 XRP per qualifying owned ledger item, with certain exceptions. These stipulations do not scale proportionally with the principal amount of an invoice settled in RLUSD. Any greater need for XRP inventory or liquidity linked to C2FO would require separate documentation detailing the service's actual operations.
How institutions utilize BNY's newly available custody will be shown by evidence of client acquisitions alongside funded XRP balances. C2FO's settlement and rollout activity will address a separate question regarding ledger usage. For XRP holders, each piece of information will be more telling than viewing service availability as a gauge of token buying.
