Hayes details FLOP’s AI compute derivatives vision after selling his altcoins

Arthur Hayes detailed the derivatives market structure for Flop Network, suggesting its native token could turn AI compute into a tradable commodity.

In a recent essay published on October 27, Hayes outlined futures and perpetual swaps related to Flop Network's anticipated compute market. Here, AI agents would compensate for processing power using FLOP.

This framework intends to set a standard price for compute, allowing traders to construct financial agreements around the resources utilized by artificial intelligence systems.

Hayes, writing on X, called his essay "The Trifecta" and described it as a guide for innovators aiming to create derivatives for the AI agent economy. His core concept suggests a liquid spot market for processing power can furnish the pricing benchmark necessary for perpetual swaps and futures.

The planned Flop Reference Compute Rate (FRCR) would be determined every hour, based on a volume-weighted FLOP price per GigaFLOP of available compute. Quarterly futures contracts would conclude on the last Friday of March, June, September, and December, utilizing US dollars for margins and payouts.

Since the compute market is priced in FLOP, but traders might prefer dollar-denominated returns, Hayes noted the need for a quanto derivative. This contract's settlement currency differs from its underlying asset, necessitating an adjustment for the FRCR versus the FLOP-to-dollar exchange rate.

For the proposed perpetual swap, funding payments would be derived from an eight-hour time-weighted average of the gap between its trading price and the FRCR. Market makers could simulate futures exposure by either providing or acquiring Flop Compute Units (FCUs), which signify reserved inference capacity for a set model and delivery timeframe.

Hayes's design mandates that suppliers post FLOP bonds, which they risk forfeiting if they fail to deliver the agreed-upon computational work. The entire derivatives proposal hinges upon Flop Network first establishing a functional spot market.

Hayes contends that current indexes tracking chip rental costs and individual AI tokens offer incomplete data because both derive from the fundamental expense of computation. Under his system, network blocks would log inference tasks, completed work, and fees paid to miners, helping establish a common reference for the FLOP-to-capacity exchange rate.

Flop Labs introduced in August 2026, proposed its native token FLOP as "food for your AI agent." An August 27 explanation from the project argued that autonomous agents require money directly exchangeable for computing resources, rather than relying on payment systems primarily structured for people and businesses. The post detailing the derivatives plan was initially posted on CryptoPotato.
