Luxor raises $16M from CMT Digital amid AI-Bitcoin miner convergence

Luxor Technology, which offers services to Bitcoin miners, has announced a $16 million investment round. This funding supports the expansion of its artificial intelligence business.

CMT Digital led the investment round. Canaan and MicroBT, manufacturers of Bitcoin mining equipment, were among the participating investors. Halo, Steelhead, and several individual investors also took part, per Luxor’s October 27 announcement.

The $16 million amount covers purchases of existing shares and new investment into Luxor. The firm did not specify the allocation between these two categories, meaning the total sum is not entirely new capital for expansion.

Luxor's AI hardware desk provides graphics processors and servers to clients, which are used to run intensive AI tasks. In contrast, Bitcoin mining typically utilizes machines designed specifically for mining.

The firm began its shift toward AI prior to this announced funding. In September, it launched its AI business, repurposing services initially created for Bitcoin miners for a different market.

The commonality between these two sectors is the required infrastructure. Both mining and AI operations depend on computing equipment and access to electricity, despite their differing hardware and workloads.

Luxor states its mining hardware desk has traded specialized machines valued at $1 billion. Furthermore, its energy business services electricity demand exceeding 75 megawatts across two US power markets.

The company maintains its Bitcoin mining operations, continuing to provide miners with a mining pool, software, and other services while building out its AI operations.
