Malaysia seizes $12.1 million in AI chips at Kuala Lumpur airport

Malaysia's seizure of $12.1 million worth of AI chips at Kuala Lumpur airport underscores its significant role in enforcing global tech trade regulations, which affects regional supply chain dynamics.

Malaysian customs personnel intercepted 30 server units containing advanced AI chips at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. This seizure amounts to roughly RM49.5 million, or approximately $12.1 million.

The shipment was held on October 15, 2026, within the airport's free trade zone. Authorities officially announced the seizure on October 28.

Aspalila Ag Tuah, the airport's customs director, stated the servers were intended for re-export to another Asian nation. Such onward movement necessitates a permit under Malaysia's Strategic Trade Act 2010.

Aspalila characterized the alleged scheme plainly, noting the goods were routed through Malaysia to avoid restrictions before reaching their ultimate destination. He stated, "shipped through Malaysia to ensure there would be no restrictions imposed while being exported to the next destination."

A Malaysian company assisting with the shipment has been contacted for the investigation; authorities have not named the firm. Customs officials indicated this incident is connected to a suspected smuggling syndicate, which has now been linked to at least five separate cases.

Aspalila reported that the seized chips across these cases total over 100 million ringgit. This October seizure mirrors an earlier incident in June 2026, where officers confiscated 72 server units valued at around RM52.9 million, or $12.93 million, under similar false declaration circumstances.

These events occur against a backdrop of export controls Malaysia implemented in 2025 concerning high-performance AI chips originating from the US. These rules followed US demands intended to limit the movement of these products to China.
