USD.AI’s $1M CHIP buyback sparks 19% rally amid Elon Musk’s AI warning

USD.AI, a decentralized lending protocol that finances AI infrastructure, including GPUs, through dollar-denominated liquidity, has attracted attention.

This attention stemmed from its native governance token, $CHIP, which experienced a 19% surge after USDAI announced a $1 million token buyback. Concurrently, trading volume increased by 331%, representing over 70% of the token's market capitalization. At the time of reporting, $CHIP was valued at $0.05058, following an 8.9% increase over the preceding 24 hours.

A token buyback involves an entity using funds to acquire its own cryptocurrency from the open market. USDAI utilized Circle’s USDC to purchase $CHIP tokens across various cryptocurrency exchanges. The disclosure indicated that USDAI bought 22,343,372 $CHIP tokens at an average price of $0.044756 per token. This acquisition involved spending roughly $1 million in USDC for over 22.34 million tokens.

This market purchase by USDAI generated extra demand for $CHIP, which supported its price due to limited available supply. This development occurred amidst scrutiny following Elon Musk’s recent warning regarding potential failures within the AI infrastructure sector.

Musk cautioned that over 200 AI-focused cloud providers, termed neoclouds, might fail as securing financing becomes more difficult. He characterized this scenario as "Guppy-level death and consolidation." Debt markets have severely restricted access to capital for companies lacking substantial revenue independent of AI data centers.

This situation prompted a key inquiry for the AI industry: whether companies can maintain growth and investments without dependable access to capital. Financial strain is possible even for rapidly expanding sectors if financing is harder to obtain or if customer revenue fails to cover operating costs.

This coincided with CoreWeave reporting $35.6 billion in outstanding debt against $5.5 billion in cash and cash equivalents as of June 2026. Furthermore, the company took on an additional $4.2 billion in debt in September. Gartner projected that by 2030, 80% of neocloud providers might cease operations due to financial pressures and fractured business models.
